double page spread analysis of q magazine

As for my magazine, I'm also creating a contents page so i have decided to analyse this contentents page in order to learn the typical features used to make a successful contents page.

The contents page is over two pages but the first page is a simple layout with the main features being a masthead, main image, contents and a smaller image on the bottom. As this is the contents of the John Lennon Q magazine i have also analyased i kno the contents page is dedicated to him .
Aswell at the image of John Lennon on the front cover, the image on the first page on the contents is also black and white, which i thought was to portray the feeling of an old image and that time is passing. As of the picture being a black and white image this creates a mysterious, yet strange image as its a long shot of a man in a chair. He has a blank facial expression which looks almost scary. Due to this picture it reinforces the target audience being mainly men as the image isnt attracting women. A typical image of a man attracting a women would be a half naked, muscular figure where as in this image theres a man wearing a suit in a rocking chair, which creates a more serious intense atmosphere.

The target audience for this contents page is men aged between eighteen to forty which can be conveyed through the colour scheme of black, red and white which lack feminity and have a basic layout with plan simple fonts.

On the front page of the magazine is the masthead which is along the top of the page on a red strip which the red strip carries onto the second page. Red has been used as of its strong connotations of passion, violence and love etc. Along the red strip in a white font is the name of the magazine Q. Next to the Q the masthead is written in a black font with the letters spaced from one another. This creates a neat and classy effect. As of the bold red background the neutral colours of black and white contrast with the red making it eye catching and easily readable.

Underneath the masthead , in the contents list of things which are included in the magazine such as music reports and new artists in the music business. At the top of the list is a red small box with white text which contrasts with the dark red. The text reads ‘ Lennon 70th’ with the o in Lennon and the 0 in 70th are connected which attracts the reader as of its interesting effect. I then wondered why Q had done this but as of the cover being based on John Lennon and the front cover John is wearing glasses this could represent John Lennons glasses which John is also famous for.

There is also another image which is small and placed in the bottom left. There is font that goes across the picture which says ‘Chuckle brothers’ with the number 82 in a bold font below. The text is written in a white font due to the image having a black background and the dark colours used for the four mens clothes. This image represents an advertisement for which is going to be spoke about in the magazine which is effective in creating the readers attention as at quick glance the image stands out more than the list of things which are above the picture.

The contents list in on the left hand side which goes downwards and carries on to the next page. The text is in a black font with the headings on the page being in a bigger and bold font which attracts the audience to read the headings before the information given underneath. The headings are easily readable due to the contrast of both black and white. The only piece of text not in a black font is the text underneath the heading ‘John Lennon’ which emphasises the importance and main feature included in the magazine. Due to this text only being in red grabs the reader to this heading. Underneath each of the text about whats going to be included is separated off with a red line which makes the writing clear and easier to red. It also adds colour to the page and illustrates the red, white and black colour scheme.

The next page is also the contents page which has the main feature being six images which are of four different versions which are able to collect, an image of a women playing a guitar, an image of an interview of The TingTings, an image of a man from the Foals, a double page spread about a band called Sleigh Bells , also a image of the band Gorillaz. These are all advertisements to what is going to be included in the magazine which attract the reader to want to read it. This is effective as some people prefer pictures then words.
On the right hand side is the contents list which is the same but on
the opposite side to the previous page. They are the same font, size and colour, which creates a neat and sophisticated effect.
