Fashion Magazine Analysis

As the basis of my magazine concept is a synergy with fashion and music i have analysed a variety of fashion magazines to incorporate stereotypical codes and conventions to aid in creating authentic and innovative product

Grazia Magazine is an extremley popular weekly women's fashion magazine as above the masthead it has a kicker which reads "Britains number one glossy" which not only suggests this magazine is better than other magazines but also encourages people to buy it.
Due to the masthead of the magazine meaning Grace in Italian this suggests the target audience for the magazine is for sophisticated, independant working women. As of the yuong actress as the main focus of the magazine this suggests the target audience is for women aged 20-35. Also Jenifer Anisten has been used on the front cover as shes seen as a role model for yuong girls today between 16-20 as she is a successful, hard working, attractive women in which yuong women will aspire to be like.

The image of Jenifer Anisten is a close up shot which keeps the audiences focus on her, she's attracting the audience as of her natural makeup and smile which shows a sense of inncoence and natural beauty in which most women aspire to have. Also Grazia have used a pull quote of Jenifer Anisten saying " I'm looking to the future know", also attracts yuong women to read her article as it shows her independent, strong personality due to her split from Brad Pitt as women may be able to relate to her and feel sympathy towards her.

Grazia has used a white and pink colour font and layout for their front cover which is extremley feminine and yuothful. The masthead "Grazia" is used in a very spohisticated font which not only reflects the target audience but gives a sense of maturity and elegence to the magazine. The masthead is placed at the top of the magazine and appears to be over lapping the image which is effective as this makes the masthead stand out and more eye catching. From my research i found the masthead Grazia appears to be in the same position on most of thier covers of grazia which shows a consistent layout throughout their magazine cover.

The conventions of a magazine such as a barcode is included in the bottom right corner to insure it dosent take any focus away from the rest of the magazine. There dosen't appear to be a price tag shown on the front cover which reflects the target audience of a more sophisticated older generation whom may not be as concerned about the price of the magazine such as teenagers might.

The cover appears to be neat and tidy without any clutter which also reflects the type of people it wants reading their magazine. Along the bottom of the magazine there is a border which says " hot buys this week" and then has a quick preview of three images. Grazia has made a border along the bottom to break up the magazine so its easier to read and also to make it look more interesting and fun to read. The articles are slanted at the bottom of the page showing the latest fashion accesories with images of yuong girls modeling them, this conveys an idea of yuoth, new and freshness to the magazine.

The are two coloumns going down either side of the image of Jennifer Anisten with a number of cover lines going down both sides of the magazine giving the audience a quick preview to the features which are included. Cover lines are placed along side the image to insure the image is the most eye catching and the main focus of the magazine. One of the articles featured in this particular magazine is "The new super rich girl" which for the audience gives them aspiration to live this materialistic lifestyle. This also relects the audience are interested in how to be successful and independent women rather then just be focused on fashion. Grazia have also used a teaser on the front cover "special preview inside" which attracts the audience to want to buy the magazine to see what this special preview is.

  1. A good start Jo - you have made some very useful comments here, but I still need you to focus on the layout and design - where things are on the page and what are the conventional features of a magazine (barcode, price, date, tag line etc)
